2nd CIAT New Forest

7th – 8th June 2025

Report by Rosemary Neale

Attelage de Tradition is all about having a good time and despite the weather which tried its hardest to dampen spirits, the 2nd CIAT in the New Forest was a roaring success.  The organisers Sam Searle and Modris Kesans pulled out the stops to ensure that the participants, though small in number but big in quality, experienced all that is expected of an AIAT event.  As AIAT is an international organisation, we were delighted to welcome Paul van Sickle from the USA as a competitor driving one of Russell Hands’ horses, Ice, to a four-wheel Phaeton by Whitlock of London and also visitors from Belgium Geert and Ine Bongers.  Over the course of the weekend we were also honoured to be visited by a party of AIAT enthusiasts from Scandinavia – Per Ivar Langhelle and Bjorn Hoie ( a former museum director) from Norway and Ivan Bak (a wheelwright and President of the Danish Driving Society) and Frede Svendsen and Allan Strom (both traditional driving enthusiasts) from Denmark.  This group had been on a tour of carriage collections in the UK and visited CIAT New Forest to see some traditional carriages in action.

The weather forecast for Saturday had been dire and at one point the organisers considered waiting for the storm to pass and running the whole event on Sunday.  As it was, the forecast improved and it was decided to go ahead with the usual format.  The Presentation took place in the New Forest show arena bedecked with the flags of the nations which belong to AIAT, in front of the three judges Modris Kesans (UK), Stefan Lecluse (Belgium) and Elizabeth Cartwright-Hignett (UK)   The judges were all impressed with the quality of the turnouts with ten participants achieving a sub-ten score and they found their winner of the Best Presentation in Rosemary Neale.  When the rosette was awarded at the Gala Dinner Rosemary expressed her thanks to her partner Martin Wilkinson and their groom for the event, Bea Searle, as participating in an AIAT event and producing a turnout to high quality is definitely a team effort!  Friday night found everyone letting their hair down after a lovely fish and chip supper in the event marquee. Jamie and Kelly Adams are regular singers at BDS Hampshire events and they certainly know how to get everyone on their feet to a medley of all time favourites – even some line dancing!

The rain held off for the Presentation but boy, did it rain in the afternoon! The Routier was around the delightful roads and tracks of the New Forest some of which had been specially opened for us. Huge thanks must go at this stage to the army of volunteers who stewarded the Routier as they had to stand out in the rain for several hours but they did so with unfailing courtesy and efficiency.  The PCs were the Champagne (or Drinking Glass), a Corridor with music (drums!) which caught out many turnouts, a Rein Back, a Curved Rail and a one-handed left-handed Circle.  It must have been the rain which messed up everyone’s concentration as there were no penalty free Routiers which is an unusual occurrence! An extra difficulty proved to be the New Forest ponies who did their best to distract some of our turnouts!

Having dried off as best they could, everyone was bussed to Careys Manor Hotel for a fabulous formal dinner with a James Bond theme.  Dr No turned up and many ladies were dressed to kill in gold lame! We were entertained by Jamie Adams, not only a wonderful singer but also a gifted magician!  The usual raffle was held with some lovely prizes donated by friends of AIAT and a lively auction raised much needed funds.  Many thanks must go to those who donated auction items especially Simon Kesans who donated a weekend driving his team.

Sunday dawned bright and clear but overnight we had sadly lost some competitors both to carriage malfunction and to the impossibility of drying everything out overnight. Paul Mills, the Technical Delegate had set a flowing but at times tricky course which required concentration.  Rosemary Neale had the only double clear (not bad for an old bird!) which clinched the Supreme Championship for her driving her pair of Welsh C ponies, Hillgarth Brenin Bach and Tydi Mr Cash to a varnished dog cart by Yerbury of Frome.  Paul van Sickle won the Single horse class and was Reserve Supreme which was an amazing achievement as he had only been driving Ice for a few days before the competition.  Horse pairs was won by Russell Hand himself driving his own Attitude and Blackie to a four-wheel Sociable by Peters of London and the hotly contested Single Pony class was won by Alison Kesans driving Dusty to a varnished Norfolk Cart.  The Multiples class comprised two lovely tandems driven by Mark Juniper and Eleanor Stevens but the win went to Eleanor driving Parcgwyn Spirit and Parcgwyn Falcon Welsh Section Ds to an 1882 Two wheeled undercut stick back gig by J Hutton & Sons of Dublin.

Thanks must also go to the major sponsor of this event Grays Horseboxes, and also Hunter Simons Accountants, Jenny Hadland Equine Physiotherapists, Kilvey Carriages and a Day to Remember Carriage Hire.

EVENT REPORT

CIAT New Forest

September 2024

- Rosemary Neale -

     ⁃

The inaugural CIAT in the New Forest took place on September 14th and 15th 2024 and what a success it was! Organisers Modris Kesans and BDS Area Commissioner Sam Searle both worked tirelessly leading up to the event to ensure it ticked every box in terms of conviviality, efficiency and everything which characterises an AIAT event.  All the AIAT events this year have had their own flavour and character, and this one was no exception. The event was New Forest themed with the traditional goody bags full of ‘forest style’ items, for example a key ring made from deer horn, and even the traditional plaque was made of wood with the logo burnt on using a local manufacturer to source the plaques!

The event started with the now almost ‘de rigeur’ Friday evening welcome party – this time with a delicious hog roast, bar in a horsebox and singing and dancing till the wee small hours! Participants were up early the following morning getting ready for the first phase, Presentation which made use of the permanent arenas in New Park, home to the New Forest Show with the permanent seating around the arena making it comfortable for the many spectators.  The Presentation phase saw the three judges, Richard Lanni  (who was President of the Jury), Caroline Douglas and Elizabeth-Cartwright-Hignett stationed in the arena to scrutinise the 18 turnouts including three newcomers Chris King, Alison Trevette and Molly Turner and, excitingly, Sylvie Devacht all the way from Belgium with her delightful Hackney pony put to a Spindle back Cut under Gig by Herford and Son . All three judges commented on the exceptional standard of the turnouts awarding several 20s – and there were no less than 12 sub-10 scores in the Presentation!!!

After a short break the participants headed off to drive a lovely Routier all through the New Forest taking in many of the iconic sights.  Along the way they had to tackle the obligatory Passages Controlees (PC) or difficulties which were a straight rail, a one-handed left-hand circle, a rein back (cunningly hidden behind a bush which caught a number of people out!), the carpet, and of course the Drinking Glass or Champagne.

Varnished dog carts seemed to be the order of the day with Road Club members Roger Derryman driving his pair of Gelderlanders to a Sporting Dog Cart by Kinross of Scotland , Rosemary Neale, Chair of AIAT,  driving her pair of Welsh Section Cs to a Four Wheel dog cart by Yerbury of Frome and Jimmy Jeffery driving his own pair of Highland x Friesians to a Four wheel Dog Cart by Jacksons of Edinburgh.  It was good to see former BDS Area Commissioner Roger Page first time out this year driving a pair of cobs to an 1854 Demi-Mail Phaeton by Bouillon of France.

Our organisers had arranged a splendid New Forest themed gala dinner at the Careys Manor Hotel on the Saturday night with a talented magician entertaining the guests throughout dinner which was followed by a raffle and auction. The rosette for Best Presentation was awarded to a delighted Rosemary Neale who said that the award is a recognition not just of her efforts but of the teamwork that goes into presentation - Martin Wilkinson for the carriage and her groom Kate Egan for turning the ponies out to perfection.

Sunday saw the final phase of the competition, the Maniabilite or cones, again in the lovely permanent arena.  Technical delegate Paul Mills, ably assisted by AIAT recruit Paul van Sickle from the USA, had devised an intricate but flowing course which produced only two double clear rounds from Sylvie Devacht and Rosemary Neale.  Jimmy Jeffries 0.2 time penalty kept him in first place in the Horse Pairs and overall Supreme Champion with Rosemary’s double clear gaining her Reserve Supreme.  Hot on their heels though was Jane Purcell White with her home-bred Abbotswood Double Delight to an 1890 varnished Dog Cart who headed up a six-strong Single Pony Class.  The Single Horse class was won by Jimmy Tate with his lovely coloured horse Alby to a 1910 Spindle Back Gig By Raworth of Oxford.  An emotional second place in the Single Horse class was claimed by Antonia Gallop driving Brickell Black Supreme (Monty to his friends) to a 1901 Panel Cart by Slacks in his last AIAT event before a well-deserved retirement.

Our thanks must go to all the amazing volunteers who turned up in numbers to enable us to play and also to the kind and generous sponsors who donated prizes for the raffle.  Also to the judges, the Technical delegate and of course to our wonderful horses and ponies!
